American Black Walnut Butcher Block - Made in the USA
American Black Walnut Butcher Block, (Juglans nigra)
Prized for its deep and rich color & caramelized hues. Black Walnut has a grain that can be worked from either direction & takes a rich finish. Walnut oxidizes to become lighter with age and is commonly used in furniture, cabinetry, gunstocks, interior paneling, and veneer. Hogan buys American Black Walnut from suppliers chosen for QUALITY. The best walnut comes from Missouri and Eastern Tennessee. Walnut is bought and sold on the NHLA grade rules, which permits sap without defect down to 4” widths and down to 6’ lengths. Over the years, we’ve taken pride in supplying very detailed specifications for customers’ walnut needs. Walnut lumber produced correctly is steamed to blend the heartwood with the sapwood producing a creamy brown color. Walnut is relatively hard and can sometimes be brittle but is beautiful, one of the true ‘Gems of the Forest.’

Brown Maple
Brown Maple, (Acer saccharum)
Unlike most other hardwoods, the sapwood of Hard Maple lumber is most commonly used rather than its heartwood. Sapwood color ranges from nearly white, to an off-white cream color, sometimes with a reddish or golden hue. The heartwood tends to be a darker reddish brown. Birdseye Maple is a figure found most commonly in Hard Maple, though it’s also found less frequently in other species. Hard Maple can also be seen with curly or quilted grain.

Sapele Butcher Block - Made in the USA
Sapele lumber’s popularity dates back to before World War II when German citizens became infatuated with the wood for its use in decorative cabinetry. During the war, the wood was used to construct the propeller blades of Zeppelins, but it has since been replaced with its former use as a cabinetry wood. In Germany, Sapele is the “go-to” choice for high-end flooring, doors, and window frames, as well as for surface veneers for cabinets and bookcases. In North America, Sapele is probably most well-known as a result of luxury car company Cadillac’s use of the wood for accents in its Cadillac CTS vehicle, but it is also used in many of the same applications as Mahogany. Examples of its more popular uses include flooring, furniture, doors, windows, cabinetry, paneling, and decorative moldings.
